HAYAGRIVA (Navratri - Day 9 )

Hayagriva is a very popular sweet in Karnataka. It is extremely easy to make and very delicious. Hayagriva is an Udupi special recipe that is offered as a prasadam / neivedhiyam. This prasadam is made of chana dal and jaggery.

On MahaNavami we worship Maa Siddhidhatri, one with healing powers. Depicted with four hands, she sits on lotus flower and blesses her devotees with wisdom & wealth. Today's color is pink, a symbol of affection and harmony.

Ingredients:

· Chana dal (Split Bengal Gram) – 1 cup

· Water – 3 and half cups

· Jaggery (adjust as per your taste) – 1 ½ cup

· Dry grated coconut – 1.5 tbsp (or chunks)

· Cashew nuts (broken)

· Raisins

· Cardamom Powder – ¼ tsp

· Nutmeg Powder – 2 pinches

· Ghee – 2 tbsp

· Salt – less than ¼ tsp


Method:

· Wash the chana dal thoroughly, and soak it for 1 hour.

· Now take a pressure cooker add the drained chana dal. Add 4 cups of water Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles.

· Fry the cashew nuts, raisins in ghee and keep it aside. Fry the dry coconut too.

· Once the cooker de pressurizes naturally add the jaggery to the cooked chana dal.

· Let the chana dal cook in jaggery for 10-12 mins. Keep it on medium low flame. It will start thickening.

· Now add the nuts, raisins, dry coconut, cardamom powder and nutmeg powder.

· Finally add the ghee and give a good mix and turn off the flame.

· Hayagriva is ready to be offered to the Goddess as naivedyam.
